How did you get into web design?

After some years of searching my way, I graduated in a multimedia developer course in 1997. I started to work for an animation film studio where I learned to work with 3D programs, I made mostly tv commercials. However I enjoyed doing this, after 2 year's work I moved into the web designing business, and I've been doing this for 8 years. I've been working as a freelancer and as an employee too. For 4 years I've been working for a studio, we do educational projects.

Do you remember the very first site you designed?

It was the first version of kilfish.com.

01

You are doing a lot of 3D, is this a specialization for you?

As I mentioned, I made tv-commercials before. So I can make 3d models, and I can make simple animations with them. I'm familiar with using compositing programs, e.g. adobe after effects, so I can build 3D and other animations in my sites. I like using photoshop creating not only website layouts but images just for art. And finally, I'm not a programmer, but I learned writing codes in Flash action script, so I can add complex interactivity to my sites.

Where do you get your art for these webpages?

I try to do everything myself. It makes the joy of creating. If I would have to use other artists' works I wouldn't enjoy doing it. Sometimes I collaborate with other people, for example my girlfriend painted the characters and the background scene for ahntrio.com. I love her art, so this is the case when I use someone other's things, but I don't like to 'steal' other photograpers', graphic artists', musicians', etc. works.

What will be the next big development in webpage design?

At this time I can mention nothing special. Now I work on a site for an online photo gallery. In the last weeks some clients found me and asked me to design site for them in the future, but these projects are not so certainty at the present until I start to work on those.

What do you think about Flash technology?

I love it. For the studio I work I have to design layouts for html based portal sites too, but when I undertake a project in my free time, I do only flash sites. There are many possibilities in flash and it's exciting to explore those. You can be very creative with flash, much more than with html sites.

02

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using Flash?

I love using it, so I can tell about the advantages. The main thing is that you can do much more and spectacular sites than using only html - or xhtml. This is the reason what matters the most for me, and the rest reasons are just extra goodies.

What are your sources of inspiration?

I always try to keep open my eyes for new things. Earlier I could easily name my favorite artists, by today there are too many people whose work I like. When I started to work as a web designer, my favorite designers were Bradley Grosh, Marc Stricklin, and Mike Young. I loved also the art of Dave McKean - www.dreamline.nu and Floria Sigismondi -www.floriasigismondi.com. I guess all of them have effect on my older works. I have a small collection of books about graphics and design, I love the ads and posters of the old times as well as today's hitech designs, I tried to mix these things into my style too.

What are your favorite website designs that you did and did NOT design yourself?

If you mean my favorite works, I think I'm satisfied with www.futurefilms.hu, www.kilfish.com/v5, www.ahntrio.com and www.rothaniko.hu. As I mentioned before, as I cannot name favorite artists, I cannot name favorite website designs. But I can say, I like the works of Sofake.

What was the toughest project or customer situation you've encountered?

Sometimes you start to work for a bad client, who doesn't know what he wants. He likes the sites you show him, but when you design something similar, he just can't accept it. This is the case when you have to stop this project and say goodbye to your client, unless you want to waste many more hours from your life. I had some clients like this, and I knew when to leave the projects.

What are your interests and dislikes in webpage design?

Interests - working for interesting, creative clients, especially for artists. Dislikes - I'm lucky, because I can do what I do for passion and not just for the money. So I don't have to do what I dislike to do. Perhaps corporate style is the thing I don't like to do, but sometimes I enjoy doing it too.

Thank you, Kilfish! It's always a pleasure to talk to a passionate graphics artis.
